The ASA Graduate Scholarship Program – Due November 4th! 

Two $3,000 (USD) scholarships will be awarded this 2011-2012 academic year. One recipiant will be chosen from an acredited program in the United States and another from Canada. Application deadlines have been extended this year.

If you have already submitted your application, please check to see if your Universities and References have sent in their transcripts and references on your behalf!

All materials are due 5:00PM EDT on Friday, November 4, 2011.

The shotcrete process offers numerous quality, efficiency, and sustainability advantages, but proper knowledge of the process is critical to the creation of a quality specification and for the success of any specifier /owner employing the process. Maintaining a high level of quality for concrete placed via the shotcrete method is ASA’s primary concern and this type of on-site presentation is an excellent tool for all involved.

ASA is a full partner in the Concrete industries’ Joint Sustainability Initiative (CJSI). In an effort to keep ASA Members up to date on the latest information regarding sustainability issues and their potential impact on the concrete/shotcrete industry, ASA includes the following link in the Member edition of this e-newsletter to the latest CJSI Industry Trends report. The most recent edition of the Concrete JSI Industry Trends Report includes information on EPA’s MACT boiler rules at risk, California moves ahead with cap-and-trade programs and concrete projects receive sustainable construction awards. How About a (Second) Lift?

The idea of placing concrete pavement in two lifts is not new. By the turn of the last century, pavement engineers could recognize the potential advantages of using different concrete mixtures for base and surface layers, and a two-lift paving process called “Granitoid Concrete Streets” was patented in 1906.

 

CC Field Test: Discovering the Unexpected

In Jan. 2009, CC embarked on a study to examine curling in nine concrete mixes placed in a 60,000-square-foot warehouse floor. The plan was to learn more about how concrete mix ingredients impacted the amount of curling.
