The ASA Graduate Scholarship Program – Due November 4th! 

Two $3,000 (USD) scholarships will be awarded this 2011-2012 academic year. One recipiant will be chosen from an acredited program in the United States and another from Canada. Application deadlines have been extended this year.

If you have already submitted your application, please check to see if your Universities and References have sent in their transcripts and references on your behalf!

All materials are due 5:00PM EDT on Friday, November 4, 2011.

Lunch and Learn Seminars: For Engineers, Architects & Project Owners

The shotcrete process offers numerous quality, efficiency, and sustainability advantages, but proper knowledge of the process is critical to the creation of a quality specification and for the success of any specifier /owner employing the process. Maintaining a high level of quality for concrete placed via the shotcrete method is ASA’s primary concern and this type of on-site presentation is an excellent tool for all involved.

CJSI Industry Trends Report

ASA is a full partner in the Concrete industries’ Joint Sustainability Initiative (CJSI). In an effort to keep ASA Members up to date on the latest information regarding sustainability issues and their potential impact on the concrete/shotcrete industry, ASA includes the following link in the Member edition of this e-newsletter to the latest CJSI Industry Trends report. The most recent edition of the Concrete JSI Industry Trends Report includes information on EPA’s MACT boiler rules at risk, California moves ahead with cap-and-trade programs and concrete projects receive sustainable construction awards. NEW YEAR FOR THE WA CHAPTER OF ACI!!!
 
Our 2011 – 2012 Chapter season starts with a new look for our logo!! Designed to reflect WA state landmarks, it also celebrates one of our state’s oldest concrete structures; the Monroe Street Bridge in Spokane.   There’s more …….to celebrate our Chapters new logo, we will be presenting each renewing membership with a first edition coffee mug to say THANK YOU for our continuing support.    Mugs will also be available for speaker gifts, purchase and other Chapter events and occasions.  The Board has also approved the logo for embroidery on shirts that will be available for member purchase.  Stay tuned for more details…….
 
KICK OFF Chapter meeting will start the year with a tour of the Nucor Steel plant in West Seattle.    Nucor is widely recognized as a leader in regional rebar and steel manufacturing and a leader in steel fabrication sustainability efforts.    Our new year will explore a variety of concrete topics on this wonderful product we call concrete! 
 
2011 MEETING CALENDAR
  
** Note:  Most meetings are scheduled for the SECOND Wednesday of the month!  (Except October!!)
 
 
  •  TUESDAY, October 11th:   Tour event!!  There will be a tour at the Nucor Steel plant in West Seattle.  This will be a great tour of a working steel manufacturing facility with high sustainable practices.
Space is limited to the first 55 people who will be split into two tour times:  Noon to 3PM and 3:30PM to 5:30PM, no more than 30 folks per tour.  Dinner is scheduled to follow at Salty’s on Alki, Complete meeting details to follow soon.
 
  • November 9th: Effective July 2011, changes in ACI 318-2011 mean new design requirements for adhesive anchors are now included with the introduction of a new adhesive anchor certification program, new reinforcement detail changes in seismic areas and new tests methods for sulphate resistance and application of new ASTM tests.  Nov. meeting is an overview presentation of 318 changes and the new Adhesive certification guidelines.  Click on HERE for an overview of changes.

But……..

Other exciting News: 
 
• ACI WA continues to promote our Student Relationships at the University of Washington and Seattle University.  We welcome Katie Kuder of SU as the Student liaison for the coming year.    We will be encouraging other state Universities & Colleges with Concrete, CM or CE programs to participate in chapter activities.  Under consideration is the 3rd annual Concrete Cylinder competition!!  Please join us in supporting the next generation of construction professionals, especially if you are an alumnus from a state program!! 
 
• We need Student Sponsors to help adopt our Students at monthly meetings.  Students pay just $5.00 to attend dinner meetings and we all know they eat more than that!!!.  Help us support student attendance by being a Student Dinner Meeting Sponsor to offset student meals.  Sponsorship is only $200!  They THANK YOU for making it possible for them to attend.
 
• The Board of Directors elects to continue the Concrete Cylinder Competition to award cash prizes and help our local state students explore the many potentials of concrete construction in the real world. 
 
• Our Chapter will be sponsoring at least 1 ACI International Seminar; Changes to ACI 318 is scheduled for October 4th at the Embassy Suites in Tukwila.  Watch for details on the Spring 2012 event.  
 
• Sarah leaves us for a big job promotion…. to be a stay at home Mom.   Please welcome Amy Black as the newest member of small but effective Association office.  Please take a moment to email or say hello at ablack at washingtonconcrete.org  and Thank you to Sarah!!!
NOW IS THE TIME TO RENEW YOUR CHAPTER DUES!!!!!!!! 
 
Dues for INDIVIDUALS remain a great value at $80.   Remember, we have a Corporate Category; Designed for Companies to have the flexibility to send ANY company representative(s) to ACI chapter meetings as the topics pertain to their area of interest and save money !  This is a very simple way to spread out your ACI educational opportunities and dollars within your company!!
 
The CORPORATE DUES Category is simple:  Identify one (1) PRIMARY Corporate member at a dues rate of $95.  All other corporate members added are at the discounted rate of only $65.  Sign up as many employees as you wish.  You save money on memberships and the Chapter gets a growing new Membership!!! This will provide you with a guaranteed number of Chapter members to attend ANY of the Chapter activities at the member rate! 
 
WA ACI Chapter Dues are invoiced beginning October 1st and are due upon receipt. Please watch your mailbox for your dues invoice and membership update form.  Chapter discounts and benefits are provided to members in good standing, so the earlier you return your dues payment, the more you SAVE!!!

This year’s Fall Committee meetings will be on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at the Millennium Hotel & Duke Energy Center in Cincinnati, OH. There are no fees to attend and all are encouraged to participate in the growth and promotion of your Association!
