ASA Graduate Scholarship Awarded For the 2009-2010 academic year, the American Shotcrete Association (ASA) has awarded Graduate Scholarships to Benjamin Turner and Nicolas Ginouse. Each student will receive a stipend of $3000 (USD) for tuition, residence, books and materials for the 2009-2010 academic year. Benjamin Turner received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from California Polytechnic State University and is currently working toward earning a Master of Science in Civil Engineering at the same university. While at Cal Poly, Benjamin has worked as an intern at AIS Construction. His work there has involved the design, bidding, and construction of multiple soil nail walls, as well as tunnel projects that involved the use of shotcrete. Currently, he is working on a design for expansion of a tunnel roof using shotcrete and rockbolts in the NORAD underground command center. Benjamin plans to focus his career around this fascinating and growing micro-industry. Nicolas Ginouse received his Mechanical and Industrial Engineering degree from Arts et Métiers Paristech in Paris, France and is currently pursuing an MS in Civil Engineering from Laval University. Nicolas is beginning his graduate studies on the shotcrete team at Laval University where the main objective of his project is to model the mixture flow at the outlet of the nozzle, to predict particles velocity, speed distribution of the stream and the effects on rebound. Nicholas is considering pursuing studies in shotcrete to the Ph.D level. Afterwards, he would like to use his expertise in shotcrete and mechanical engineering to help develop shotcrete equipment and processes. Ultimately, through his industrial contacts in France, he is very interested in promoting exchanges between the North American and European shotcrete industries. Established in 2008, the purpose of the ASA Graduate Scholarship Program is to identify, attract, and assist outstanding graduate students pursuing careers within the field of concrete with a significant interest in the shotcrete process. For a complete description of these awards, requirements and directions visit www.shotcrete.org, and click on Grad Scholarships.
