American Concrete Institute Detailing Manual
This must-have resource provides answers to many detailing questions asked by design engineers, architects, contractors, detailers, and engineering students. It is divided into three sections and includes ACI documents: “315-99: Details and Detailing of Concrete Reinforcement” and “315R-04: Manual of Engineering and Placing Drawings for Reinforced Concrete Structures,” as well as supporting reference data. The three sections are:
- SECTION 1 defines responsibilities for architects, engineers, and detailers and establishes standards of practice for both structural and placing drawings.
- SECTION 2 illustrates methods for presenting necessary design information through 50 oversized, fold-out drawings of highway and non-highway structures. Structural drawings conform to “Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI 318-02/318R-02)” and all drawings were prepared with the assistance of the Federal Highway Administration, California Department of Transportation, and Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute.
- SECTION 3 includes supporting reference data in specific chapters on reinforcing bars, wires, bar supports, spirals, mathematical formulas and tables, and common symbols and abbreviations.

GI Bill Reimbursable for ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I Certification
Here is the latest news from the ACI Certification Department – please forward to anyone in your Local Sponsoring Group who may not have access to e-mail.
**** ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I Certification now reimbursable to Veterans through the GI Bill ****
ACI has received recognition of the Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I certification exam by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) for reimbursement through the GI Bill. U.S. Veterans may now attend a Concrete Field Testing Technician
- Grade I exam session (full initial, or partial retest) from any ACI Local Sponsoring Group, then submit a copy of their invoice/receipt from the LSG to the VA for reimbursement of up to $500.00. At this time, the Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I program is the only ACI program that has received this recognition, however, the ACI Certification Department plans to complete and submit applications for a number of additional ACI certification programs during 2009.
To view the VA’s recognized exam list, including the Concrete Field Testing Technician
– Grade I listing, click the following link:
http://inquiry.vba.va.gov/weamspub/buildSearchNE.doPlease note that the GI Bill provides for reimbursement for exams only, so fees for training in preparation for the exams listed on invoices/receipts prepared for Veterans is not eligible for reimbursement. For more information, contact the ACI Certification Department at (248) 848-3790.
**** ACI Concrete Construction Special Inspector Education Requirements Modified
****
The ACI Certification Programs Committee recently approved a revision to the Concrete Construction Special Inspector (CCSI) certification program to add two new Education/Work Experience blends to the acceptable criteria list. The program now more adequately recognizes specific skills developed through engineering curriculums and reduces the required amount of field experience for individuals graduating with B.S.E. degrees. To view the Press Release with a link to the current criteria, please click here:

http://www.iacet.org/content/continuing-education-units.html**** Exam Challenges ****
All ACI Certification written exam booklets contain an Examination Challenge Form (Form D8). Prior to the start of the exam, examinees should be instructed to provide details on any question they consider to be unfair, unclear or incorrect during the exam. If the complaint is found to be valid, grades will be adjusted accordingly. If time runs out, examinees should be given an additional 10 minutes (if needed) to complete the challenge form (once the answer sheet has been collected).
